Welcome to my PostHuman Experiment

working title: Calling all artists - What has your social media done for you lately?

This body of work is about what it means and how it feels to be posthuman in post-postmodern times, which by lack of a clear definition is problematic from the start.

The experiment is in its initial design phase, and parameters are being defined. The experiment will be released at stages via versions associated with the unfolding of the concepts of posthumanism, and project development.

The experiment will generate metadata which I will then translate into traditional artwork to be situated in the gallery environment like the conceptual map (print) shown below on the left. Below is a very brief description about the project

Conceptual maps: what are they?

Two conceptual maps resulted from a social experiment that I created as part of my MFA thesis exhibition, the Blissomatic Surreal. I first created an online survey, emailed a request to potential respondents, collected and analyzed the data and created the conceptual maps (one is shown left).

This project will culminate in a series of similar conceptual maps. This time however, the gathering of the data will form part of the structure of the experiment. Version 1 is In development being prototyped and managed online here at posthumanartist.com. Version 2 will still be at this address, but will be in blog form and contain deliverables such as: content used for grant applications, and the actual surveys in the online environment used to generate the metadata.

The project will initially culminate in a series of posters and later extend to other formats. Essentially my goal is to measure the artist's perception of the usefulness of the newest internet technologies: wikis, social media, blogs, microblogs, podcasts, RSS, metadata, etc.

Research areas of interest include the following :

  • how are artists using technology.
  • are artists benefiting from technology - what, why, and how.
  • how is extraneous matter (external links, advertising, etc) on a professional blog used and perceived
  • what's considered content and what's spam

Minimal Anticipated Media, Software, Communication Technologies to be Utilized

  • software: Dreamweaver, PhotoShop, Illustrator, Final Cut Studio, Sound Pro, WordPress
